Former Elections Director Chris Thomas once again confirms that Michigan elections are fair, secure, and accurate
Detroit, MI - On Tuesday, ahead of President Trump’s State of the Union address, former longtime Michigan elections director warns that we will likely hear more inflammatory rhetoric, fearmongering, and disinformation regarding Michigan’s elections. The following statement can be attributed to Chris Thomas, senior advisor for Promote the Vote Fund:
“Michigan has made huge strides in recent years to modernize our elections and improve access to the ballot box for all eligible voters across the state. Our voters turn out and our election officials and election workers dedicate themselves to ensuring all our votes are efficiently and accurately counted. It’s been, to say the least, disheartening to watch President Trump and his administration use lies, long-debunked conspiracy theories, and—especially when it comes to Detroit—outright racism to undercut voter confidence in our elections.
“The disinformation and flat out lies we are likely to hear tonight about elections across the country and particularly in Detroit are not new. We have all been listening to, fact-checking, and debunking these politically-motivated conspiracy theories for years. But as efforts to restrict access to the ballot box ramp up at both the federal and state level, and as threats to take federal control of our state-run elections by force increase, it’s more important than ever that we take a stand for the truth.
“And the truth is that Michigan runs damn good elections.”
Thomas served as Michigan’s elections director for nearly four decades, serving under both Republican and Democratic Secretaries of State. He now works as a senior advisor to Detroit Clerk Janice Winfrey.
